The dataset contains monthly area means of air temperatures for Austria and the federal states for the period 1850–2025. The data is based on the SOCRATES dataset (Spatial Reconstruction of Climate in Austria Combining SPARTACUS and HISTALP Datasets), which combines the strengths of two established climate datasets: the high spatial resolution of SPARTACUS and the long-term coverage and homogeneity of HISTALP. SOCRATES is based on a statistical reconstruction method (Reduced Space Optimal Interpolation, RSOI), which combines principal component analysis and optimal interpolation to consistently derive spatially high-resolution temperature fields over long time periods. The dataset is based on a selection of 18 stations and is not updated on an operational basis.
To determine the human impact on the climate since the start of the Industrial Revolution, the Climate Status Report 2025 compares temperature trends with the pre-industrial reference period of 1850–1900. Locally estimated scatterplot smoothing (LOESS) is used to visualise the temperature trend.
