Quality-checked station data for Austria in monthly resolution (v2)

Description

Public

This data set contains monthly values for a wide range of meteorological and climatological parameters. The monthly average values for the corresponding variables are given for all climate observation dates. The three climate observation dates (I, II, III) have changed over time in Austria. Until 1971, the climate observation dates were set at 7, 14 and 21 o'clock MOZ, from 1971 to 2003 at 7, 14 and 19 o'clock MOZ, and since 2003 at 7, 14 and 19 o'clock MEZ. For other parameters, monthly averages over the entire month, absolute minimums and maximums or monthly totals are given. Furthermore, statistical evaluations with information on special meteorological observations (e.g. thunderstorms, black ice, fog, hail, storms, etc.) as well as distributions of precipitation amounts or snow depths can be found. Some data has been available since the 18th century (e.g. temperature values from Kremsmünster since 1767). In the past, data was recorded at manual weather stations through visual observation or by reading instruments. Since the 1980s, these manual stations have been gradually replaced by (semi-)automatic stations (TAWES). Today, the GeoSphere Austria station network comprises around 260 measuring stations that automatically record most meteorological parameters. In addition, however, many stations continue to observe weather and climate-related parameters by eye. These standardised and continuous climatological observations enable accurate recording of atmospheric conditions. Long climatological measurement series allow the climate to be analysed and conclusions to be drawn about climate change. The climate and measuring stations of GeoSphere Austria cover all climate regions and altitude levels in Austria. The quality status of individual parameters can be found in the quality flag with the name suffix _flag. The data set is updated every 10 minutes based on the archived databases, although retroactive changes may occur due to data verification.

The data in this dataset was collected via the TAWES measurement network and the records of weather and climate observers at GeoSphere Austria. Measurements are sent as unverified ten-minute and one-minute data to GeoSphere Austria, where they are then subjected to various automatic checks depending on their type and nature. Suspicious values are forwarded to the experts at GeoSphere Austria for manual verification. After a maximum of 1-3 working days, suspicious measurement data is corrected, supplemented or deleted according to meteorological criteria. The monthly data from the measurements were stored as derived variables (sum, mean, extreme value, etc.) depending on the parameter. The observed data, together with the derived variables from the measurement network, are subjected to further verification processes, which can take up to 6 months.
