The GeoSphere Austria warning system provides information to protect the population from potential weather hazards. As well as providing meteorological data such as warning progress, wind speeds, rainfall amounts and snow depths, it also highlights the potential impacts of the expected weather conditions. The warning level issued (yellow, orange or red) is based not only on meteorological parameters, but also on factors that can intensify or reduce the impact, such as traffic volume, time of day or season, vegetation status and pre-existing region-specific stressors. Recommendations for action are also provided to minimise or prevent damage to people and possessions in the expected warning situation as much as possible. GeoSphere Austria's weather warnings apply to permanently settled areas. The high alpine regions of Austria are not covered by a warning. Although, the meteorological description may sometimes contain information about the situation in the high mountains.
