Around 150 of the approximately 270 semi-automatic weather stations (TAWES) are classified as SYNOP stations. In addition to automatic measurements, supplementary observations in accordance with WMO criteria are recorded by station operators at the main Central European synoptic times of 06:00 and 18:00 UTC (Coordinated Universal Time) at approximately 65 locations. In some cases, additional times are provided as well. Data is transmitted directly to GeoSphere Austria via SYNOP codes (Sheet 1, Sheet 2). Although automated systems are becoming increasingly capable of recording weather conditions, manual observations are still necessary as a supplement for cloud type, cloud base, visibility and type of precipitation. On-site maintenance covers around three-quarters of the sites.
